These ants are similar in size to pavement ants but give off a distinctive “rotten coconut” odor when crushed. They typically nest under stones, firewood, and debris outdoors but can quickly relocate inside wall voids or flooring when conditions outside become too wet or cold. They’re one of the most persistent nuisance ants in Illinois homes.

Pharaoh ants are tiny and light yellow to reddish in color. They prefer the warmth and protection of indoor environments, nesting in wall voids, insulation, or behind cabinets. Because their colonies can split into multiple nests when disturbed, controlling pharaoh ants can be challenging without professional treatment.

Carpenter ants are noticeably larger than most common household ants. They don’t eat wood like termites but excavate it to build their colonies, which can weaken structural wood over time. They often start nests outdoors in trees or stumps, then expand into homes through siding, eaves, or other entry points. Their presence indoors, especially during warmer months, often signals a nearby colony.

Also known as larger yellow ants or golden ants, citronella ants are recognized by their golden-yellow coloring and the lemon-like scent they emit when crushed. They typically nest in soil, under rocks, or around building foundations. These ants are more noticeable when their winged swarmers emerge, usually late summer to fall.

These ants get their name from their unique habit of raising their heart-shaped abdomen over their body when alarmed. They can range from light brown to black and commonly nest in decayed wood, wall voids, or insulation. Outdoors, they are often found in tree stumps, logs, or woodpiles near homes.

Field ants vary in size and color but are most often seen nesting in lawns, fields, and open spaces. They aren’t typically indoor pests but may occasionally wander inside while foraging. Outdoors, their large soil mounds can become a nuisance in landscaped areas.

Active during cooler parts of the year, small honey ants are dark brown and around 1/8 inch long. They typically nest beneath stones, in soil, or within void spaces under floors and slabs. These ants are often the first to appear in early spring or late fall when other species are less active.
